"Sometimes a shot comes up on the back of the camera and you know its the that is "it" moments. There's no more improvements needed. The photographer knows it and so does the model. It's perfection. Anything else is downhill."

"Choose carefully who you work and associate with. Some people will work to build you up and help you succeed, some will work to help you fail. While constructive criticism is useful, there is nothing constructive about the criticism issued by the latter group. They are quick to make sure you know your shortcomings and the few compliments you will get from such people seem to have a way of making you feel worse. Get them out of your life and move forward"
Model: Joshua Maliszewski
"I've been fortunate to have worked with some celebrities and it is always a joy. Of those I would like to work with, Brad Pitt comes to mind first. Just from what I have seen of him in films, I get the idea he has a fun, flippant attitude towards life. That is kind of how I like to view life and express in my photos. Nothing is all that serious. Madonna comes to mind second. Many other names pop up behind these but it is difficult to prioritize one over the other, they all have compelling reasons for wanting to work with them."

"A good photographer can be the best friend a model has in the business. Work with photographers who can not only help you build your portfolio, but may be able to help you gain exposure and industry contacts. Get signed by a reputable agency with a track record of success and then continue to look for any opportunity to promote yourself. It's part looks, part talent, a lot attitude, and part being seen by the right person at the right time!"

"Rejection is a major part of this business. Really it happens every day and I just move on to the next person on the list, or the next shoot or whatever. I recently faced a very major and expensive rejection and it was a little difficult to bounce back from. My biggest dream had become my biggest nightmare. It was painful. Very painful. A couple days after receiving the blow, I wrote down all the factors that had influenced the shoot in a negative way. While most were factors outside my control, there were some things I could address. With each of those I took actions to correct them. Then I hooked up with a model who was as dedicated as I was and over several shoots in a short span, shot the best work I have ever done. The results of these shoots will be coming out in four different publications this month. Shooting my best work and getting it out to the world to see is what stopped the pain of the failure."

"For aspiring models, my advice is to be dedicated. It takes more than a pretty face or great body to make it in the business. Of the hundreds of models I've worked with, only a few have demonstrated the passion, drive and commitment it takes to succeed. It also takes the right attitude. Don't make the mistake of thinking because you are hot the world is at your back and call. Show appreciation to those who help you along the way or they won't help you for long. A simple genuine "Thank you" can go a long way."

"Life without a dream is no life at all. I CREATE them. And when I reach a dream or a dream comes true, I create a new one. There always has to be something better to strive toward or life becomes stagnant and boring. As for how they come true, I tend to see in my mind what is going to happen before it happens. Sometimes it seems as if I am actually there. For example, last December I was in my kitchen and all of a sudden it seemed the kitchen vanished and I was on a beach doing a major photo shoot. It was very pronounced. Come February I was driving to Los Angeles to do a shoot with the actor Vincent De Paul and actress Sally Kirkland who had just completed filming the movie Oak Hill. The photos are to be running with an interview that will be published in London this June."

"The most memorable was a shoot I had published last summer in Paris. It wasn't the first time I had been published by them, but they absolutely LOVED the shoot and the model. They went all out with advance promotion plugging both me and the model as if we were the absolute zenith. When the article came out it was even better. As they put it "A Star is Born". At that time, I sincerely believed the model was destined for the top as both a model and an actor. Seeing that the publication felt the same was significant. It was a very special moment to me because it did seem to me that a star had in fact been born and it meant a lot to me to think that I would watch one of my models make it to the top. That mattered a lot to me for some reason."

After his divorce, Mark somehow found photography as a creative outlet and a new field to venture on as he again starts his life. "I went to the east coast to get my mind off of things and visited my sister who was then taking photography classes. Seeing the difference in her photos and what I was able to get with my point and shoot, I decided I was never going to take a bad picture again. Came back to Denver, bought my first 35mm camera and I have been shooting ever since. In the last decade, it has increasingly become the main focus of my life... if not an obsession... and I am dedicated to finding ways to improve my art form with each shoot I do." But like most photographer, it was not an easy start. "Many times I've thought of giving it up due to economics or rejection or whatever but then I would look at my work, see the beauty in it and find myself unable to walk away from it." So, what's the best thing in Denver for Mark? "I've moved away from Denver many times and always come back. It is a beautiful, clean modern city. While we lack a nearby ocean, we have mountains, deserts, plains and about every type of scenery you could want in a photoshoot within just a few miles."

"At first photography was CAPTURING things with my camera. Hunting out beautiful things to photograph. Then it evolved to CREATING beautiful things to photograph: sets, lighting, etc. I also evolved from a photoshoot being a discovery process to bring out the best in the model into a photo needing to tell a story. It can be done in many ways, but the final image needs to be not only a work of art, but it needs to evoke an emotion, reaction or response on the part of the person looking at it."
